CNN.com - Troops put thorny questions to Rumsfeld - Dec 8, 2004: "You can have all the armor in the world on a tank, and it can [still] be blown up."

Here is a thought experiment. Imagine this were pre-election days, when the Bushmen are going after Kerry for voting against the armor (after voting for it, of course). Now, Kerry says that the problem in the front is bad planning, and no amount of technology, or armor, can save the soldiers. Perfect logic, agreed.

But do you think the Bushmen would spare him? Their hordes baying for his blood for being unpatriotic, and disrespectful towards to those in the harm's way. But since it's Rummy, the incredible success story that earned a second term, it's all okay.

Comments:
This is what happens when you have the military aligned totally towards one political party.

It is no secret that members of the armed forces are predominantly Republican. They have remained loyal to the GOP since Eisenhower and moved further to the right after the Vietnam war.

Rummy basically asked soldiers who are complaining to quit whining - and ultimately they will. These guys would still see the GOP as the only party that looks after their interests.

That's why the GOP can get away with any thing - bad planning, inadequate troops, etc etc. We can point out all we want about how Kerry would have got buried if he made a similar statement - the GOP is far superior at trash talking, but more importantly, Kerry would get very little support from the very military for whom he shows concern.
