What Liberal media?!

Thru Josh Marshall, we learn that CBS and NBC are refusing to air an ad for the United Church of the Christ... because it shows the Church's policy of inclusion of gays, and same-sex couples in their congregation. The ad itself has this message: "if Jesus did not turn away any one, why should we?" Innocuous? Well, not for the networks! You know, the Big Bro is watching!!

This is the Liberal media?!

If you think CBS and NBC are being stupid, and should stop cowering, you are in my club.

Comments:
This is a classic case of avoiding controversy but still keeping the debate open.

First off, we still have to acknowledge that the media inspite of FOX and Friends is still liberal - to be more precise, it does not support the conservative point of view on any major issue of debate ( i.e. women's abortion rights, gay rights, church-state separation, civil liberties etc).

There is nothing to be gained from airing these ads - absolutely Nothing - well a few thousand gay people will know that they are welcome to the church- a message that they will still get from watching the same ads on cable.Good for them.

On the other hand if CBS airs an ad that has a message of inclusiveness, does this not behold them to air an anti gay marriage ad if approached in the future by the conservatives?

CBS is in the business of giving us news - I don't think news media should be airing advertisements about issues which are religiously controversial- if they start doing that they have to remain fair to both sides - which in essence means an ad war between churches which support inclusiveness, even though they do not agree with the concept of homosexuality and the churches which condemn homosexuality and does not really care whether such people should have the same rights to worship.

By now, we have all realized that the religious right is LOOOADDDEDDD with money if not with real moral virtues. They will flood the TV stations with conservative ads - Churches which promote inclusiveness will not be able to match them. THEY WONT come CLOSE.

So by refusing to air these ads, CBS and NBC did the SMAAAARTEST possible thing - if not the right thing.
The conservatives will not be able to cry wolf saying that the liberal media is pushing down "liberal values" down the the throat of the "Heartland". Not giving a chance to these conservative phonies to play their favorite game of divide and rule is a SMART thing to do.
Besides, it also gives them a chance to gloat as to how influential they have become that they can influence even " the liberal media."

But the ad will still get telecast in the cable networks - so the message did not get LOST just because CBS refused to air it.Of course it does not get wide spread publicity either.

This war against these right wingers will have to be won with wisdom - The wisdom which now dictates that this so called 50-50 nation is no longer 50-50. It is now 51-48 (the margin of victory for Walker,Texas Ranger) Let's not forget that it was the controversy about gay weddings in San Fran and Massachussets that drove these right wingers crazy than the issue of gay marriage itself and its socio religious implications.

Controversies are only going to HELP the right wingers and make moderate conservatives lean more towards them.

At the same time, the fact that we live in this wired world coupled with cable news channels will make sure that the voices of reason are heard. It will also make conservative people think about the issue more - especially when they hear what CBS actually did some thing which they will surely consider a sign of consideration for conservative views.

AND THAT IS WHAT WE WANT. The conservatives who rushed to the polls to support W felt that they were not even LISTENED to if not AGREED with by the liberal media/Kerry/BlueStates/Donkey...Buffalo... just about every one else!!!

We have to make sure that moderate/religous conservative people do not have this feeling that they are NOT HEARD at all. When we show them consideration, we will at least made a significant first step in making sure that conservatives do not feel totally ignored.
