His own Gujarat
The complete impotence of the Vajpayee government while innocent civilians were being slaughtered, and worse, on the streets of Ahmedabad tarred his personal image badly. I did not realize the ground reality in the immediate aftermath. However, now, even Advani gets it.
Now, Manmohan Singh is facing his own Gujarat - in Jharkhand. If he fails to act in a manner that is seen as honest (yes, it should be seen by the wide world), he will permanently lose his credibility. Sonia Gandhi has already spoilt the chances of the India chatterati annointing her the new Mahatma Gandhi. It's now Dr.Singh's turn.
Will he learn from his predecessor?
